Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

When observing Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we are encouraged to celebrate by engaging in acts of service as well as remembrance. Two personally challenging thoughts emerge:
- One of the ways that Rev. King served his people, and indeed the people of the nation, was to frame his work in light of the Biblical story of the Exodus. He used God’s word to energize and guide his work and to inspire the people. We, too, can serve our colleagues and the world by helping to connect and frame the stories of our lives in light of Biblical stories, and the larger narrative of God’s grace and salvation. How do we see God’s story reflected in our own lives? In the life of our congregations?
- As with MLK day, we honor Christ best by acts of service — when we love and serve those whom He loves and serves. Matthew 25:34-40 tells us that when we serve “the least of these” we are in fact serving Christ. How can we honor Christ by serving? Who are the “least of these” who are in our paths or on our doorstep?
I resolve to honor both my Lord and the memory of Dr. King by seeking to discover the service opportunities in front of me and by seeking to discover how God’s story is unfolding in the midst of mine.
Shalom;
Rebecca
